Judy Hoffpauir LeJeune

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church for Judy Hoffpauir LeJeune, 75, who died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at The Crossing in Baton Rouge.
Rev. Peter Gaughan, pastor of First United Methodist Church, will officiate for the services.
The family requests visitation Friday from 9:30 a.m. to service time at First United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery in Mowata.
Judy was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for many years, a member of Les Dames Acadienne and the Crowley Garden Club. She began playing the organ at First United Methodist Church at the age of 14. Except for a short break, she remained faithful to the congregation, playing most of her adult life.
Judy’s musical talent could also be heard at weddings, funerals, and community plays throughout Crowley. Her most recent endeavor was working with the Crowley Community Choir in performing “A Christmas Melody,” Crowley’s first community-wide event this past December.
She served as secretary at First United Methodist Church for many years, secretary for Dr. Craig Brammer, and as a receptionist for Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home. Judy will be missed in our community by all who enjoyed her gift of music.
Judy is survived by one daughter, Cherie Thibodaux and husband Shaun of Prairieville; two sons, Christopher LeJeune of Carencro and Kevin LeJeune of Crowley; two granddaughters, Vivian and Lydia Thibodaux of Prairieville; one brother, Charles Kenneth Hoffpauir and wife Jackie of Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Vaughn Charles LeJeune; and her parents, Stanley and Myrtle Hoffpauir.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 321 E. Third St., Crowley.

Wesley Taylor Spencer

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at Bethel CME Church for Wesley Taylor Spencer.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Charles Rochester.
Interment will be in West Crowley Cemetery.
Wesley Taylor Spencer, affectionately known as “Dub”, or “Mr. Dub” of Crowley, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, at Acadia General Hospital, in Crowley.
Wesley was born on July 17, 1929, to Arthur Lee and Olivia Brown Spencer in Crowley where, at an extremely early age, he developed a strong work ethic, working tirelessly from early morning to late evenings at Babin’s Dairy Farm, on rice farms, and Crowley rice mills.
He later qualified for and became a certified licensed plumber; ever present and readily available to all who needed him, until his retirement some three years ago.
Wesley was a lifelong member and faithful steward of Bethel CME Church in Crowley. Wesley’s spirituality was keenly evident in his kind and gentle spirit, his patient manner, his charitable acts, his joy of life, his sense of gratitude, and his compassionate and loving heart.
He leaves to mourn his passing one brother, Sherman L. Spencer of Fayetteville, Georgia; one sister, Sylvia Carrier (Louis) of Houston, Texas; three cherished goddaughters, and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 21, in the Sanctuary of Bethel CME Church beginning at 8:30 a.m. until time of service.

George Lewis Higgins Jr.

George Lewis Higgins Jr., age 92 years, of Pineville, entered into eternal rest on Feb. 15, 2020, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be from noon until time for the celebration of his life at 2 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 21, in the chapel of the First Baptist Church, Pineville, with Dr C. Stewart Holloway, Reverend Anthony Mangun and Reverend Jack West officiating.
Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park, under the direction of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria.
George Higgins was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Baton Rouge to the union of George Lewis Higgins Sr. and Nannie Pulliam.
He was a graduate of Central High School, near Baton Rouge. He received his B.A. in History from Louisiana College at Pineville; his Th.D. in Bible History from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; his M.A. in Higher Education from the University of Colorado; and his Ph.D. of Education from Oklahoma State University.
He was a high school teacher, coach and principal for many years at the Acadia Baptist Academy, near Eunice. In September, 1976, he relocated to Pineville to begin working at the business office of the Louisiana Baptist Convention as director for the Church Personnel Information Services, until he retired in January, 1996.
During his entire adult life, he served in the ministry, a number of times in the capacity of an interim pastor, until his failing health prevented him.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Earline Sallier Higgins, of 71 years, eight months and eight days, who died 5 1/2 months before him, on Aug. 31, 2019; his parents, George and Nannie Pulliam Higgins; brother, Ivy Charles “Bill” Higgins; sister, Katie Lee Pulliam Dutsch; and nephew, George “Ricky;” Dutsch preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his only child, George L. Higgins III and wife Cindy Ammons Higgins; grandchildren, George Wesley Higgins, George Alexander Higgins, Grant Lewis Higgins and Garet Chandler Higgins; great-grandchildren, Grace, Caroline and Harper Higgins; sister-in-law, Glenda Sallier Hofius and husband Ted; numerous and much loved nieces, Kathy Hofius Davis (Tim) and Karen Hofius Skinner (Steve); nephews, Mark Colvin (Leslie) and Russell Colvin; Sandy Dutsch (Ricky); great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.
Pallbearers honored to serve will be Wesley Higgins, Alex Higgins, Grant Higgins, Chandler Higgins, Hubert Stagg Jr., and Judge Richard E. Starling Jr.

Loretta Gail Hebert

RAYNE - Memorial services will be held at a later date for Loretta Gail Hebert, 67, who died Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at The Ellington Nursing Home in Rayne.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Hebert of Rayne, and daughter, Jeanette Hebert of Kinder.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rayo Lejeune; mother, Mable Leger Lejeune; and brother, Carson Lejeune.

Bourgeois signs to continue softball career

Rayne High’s Kassidie Bourgeois signed a letter of intent to continue her softball career with the Buccaneers at Christian Brothers University, a Division II college located in Memphis, Tennessee. In attendance for the ceremony were, seated, Kassidie joined by her parents, Luke and Kristi Bourgeois; standing, Coach Nicole Lanthier of La. Glory, RHS Softball Coach Natalie Moody and RHS Principal J. Wendall Prudhomme. Kassidie leads the Lady Wolves at the catcher’s position, was tagged 2nd Team All-District her sophomore year and 1st Team All-District last year during her junior campaign. Rayne’s Hawley claims state championship

Wolves place fourth in team competition

The RHS wrestling team traveled to Bossier City over the weekend where they participated in the 2020 LHSAA Division II State Wrestling Championships at the Century Link Center.
As a team, the Wolves placed fourth overall in Division II, falling behind Teurlings Catholic, North DeSoto and Archbiship Shaw.
The Wolves were represented in the finals of the tournament by three wrestlers, Daylon Dugas, Ryder Hawley and Miles Doucet.
Dugas and Doucet fell short and completed the tournament as state runner-up.
Hawley was the lone Wolf to capture a state title, his award coming in the 145-pound weight class.
Hawley is the first state champion since the 2018 state tournament when the Wolves crowned three state champs.
Individually, the Wolves finished with nine individuals placing, including:
• Jakarion Fontenot, 6th place at 106 lbs.
• Daylon Dugas, state runner-up at 113 lbs.
• Blaze Cormier, 6th place at 120 lbs.
• Ryder Hawley,state champion at 145 lbs.
• William Billings, 3rd place at 160 lbs.
• Emile Richard, 5th place at 170 lbs.
• David George, 6th place at 182 lbs.
• Ron Roberts, 5th place at 195 lbs.
• Miles Doucet, state runner-up at 220 lbs.
Congratulations to the Wolves and Head Coach Shelby Thibodeaux and his staff for another great season.

Wolves to meet Indians in district finalé

Friday contest to determine district champions

RAYNE - Anyone wanting to witness a good basketball game needs to be at Rayne High on Friday as the Wolves will host Washington-Marion in what is sure to be a barn-burner.
Both teams enter the final district game of the season with one loss each (6-1), Rayne’s only district loss of coming at the hands of the Indians (75-70) in first round district action.
Fans are urged to wear their purple and gold for Friday’s game to show their support for the Wolves.
Rayne High, presently at 21-11 on the season, claimed a district win on Friday, Feb. 14, over LaGrange High.
During a Valentine’s Day road contest on Friday, the Wolves outscored the Gators 85-73 for the district win.
Leading Rayne scorers was Leon Smith with 30 points, followed by Kaleb Colomb with 15. Antonio Cormier drained 11 points and Lance Smith hit double figures with 10.
As of press time, the Wolves stand at the No. 13 position in state power rankings, poised for post-season action.
Playoff pairings for the prep boys basketball playoff brackets will be posted by the LHSAA on Monday, Feb. 24, with post-season slated to begin Friday, Feb. 28, with bi-district games.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Boys’ Marsh Madness will be held March 10-14 at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles.
The Lady Wolves, who completed their season during their own Valentine’s Day district contest at LaGrange, fell to the Lady Gators.
Rayne High was led in scoring by Braille Washington and Leah Trahan with seven and six points, respectively.
Lauren Broussard chipped in a trey, Paige Figaro and Amiyah Jenkins each scored a bucket and Nae Francis hit a free throw to complete the Lady Wolves’ scoring.

Rayne Frog Derby seeking contestants

Tradition continues by Rayne Lions Club

The annual Frog Derby competition, sponsored every year by the Rayne Lions Club since the 1940s, is seeking contestants for the 2020 crown.
Young ladies who are freshman-seniors in high school, have an Acadia Parish address or phone number or who attend an Acadia Parish school are eligible to compete for the title of 2020 Frog Derby/Frog Jockey Queen.
Orientation for any young lady competing will be held on Monday, March 9, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Rayne Lions Club Hut on Frog Festival Drive near the Civic Center.
