Storm system causes damage in Acadiana

Heavy rainfall, winds cause Rayne troubles

Fallen trees and flooded roads were the products of a weather system that swept through Acadiana on Thursday, April 18, dumping almost five inches of rain in only five hours.
City crews were busy throughout the day, night and into the following day clearing debris and repairing electrical lines from fallen trees.
Parts of The Boulevard and other low-lying city streets were closed due to flooding as a result of the large amount of rain received in such a short amount of time. (Acadian-Tribune Photos by Lisa Soileaux)

‘Paint the Town Green’ contest set for Frog Festival

Businesses, schools and homes invited to participate

RAYNE - Last year the Rayne Chamber of Commerce partnered with local businesses and schools in a city-wide decorating contest to spread the frog spirit throughout our city during Frog Festival Week.
The Chamber would like to continue this fun this year and “PAINT THE TOWN GREEN” once again!
The color green will be splashed across the city’s storefronts, in the schools, and at homes in the city (NEW THIS YEAR) while we celebrate that little creature we love so much, the frog.
Paint a window, decorate the office, decorate the front door of your home, or have your students dress in green, it is “toadally” up to you! Just make it GREEN, GREEN, GREEN!
A team of local judges will visit local businesses and homes in the city that have entered the competition in search of the best display of the “FROG” spirit and pride.
Judges will also seek out the school who has the most kids wearing the color green for the day. This is a free competition so be sure to get in on all the fun.
Anyone wanting to join in on the fun, please fill out the form included on the Frog Festival website (www.raynefrogfestival.com) and return it to the Rayne Chamber of Commerce no later than Monday, May 6.
Judging will take place on Thursday, May 9, between 9 a.m. and noon. Winning school will be announced at 2:30 p.m. on May 9 with a visit from Monsieur Jacques “The Frog.”
The winning businesses and homes will be announced during the opening ceremonies at the Frog Festival Fair Grounds immediately following the 2019 Rayne Frog Festival Grand Parade on Thursday, May 9.
So let’s all go GREEN and help the “FROG” festivities begin!

Toups among James Beard finalists

Rayne native selected among chef finalists

The James Beard Foundation recently announced its annual culinary awards.
The awards, widely considered as the Oscars of food, cover nearly 60 categories, including Restaurant and Chef, Restaurant Design, and Media and highlight some of the best chefs and restaurants in the US.
Patrick O’Donnell at the Inn at Little Washington has already been announced as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award, but the other categories remain up for grabs.
Particular local interest falls in the “Best Chefs in America” category, chefs who set high culinary standards and also demonstrate integrity and admirable leadership skills in their respective regions. A nominee may be from any kind of dining establishment but must have been working as a chef for at least five years, with the three most recent years spent in the region.
In the category of Best Chef: South Region, New Orleans received three nominations, one of them being Rayne native Isaac Toups of Toups’ Meatery, who was a finalist for this award in 2016 and a semifinlaist in 2014 and 2015.
Toups has a non-traditional style of cooking, with a Cajun accent not just in his speaking. His cooking features his background as a deep-rooted Louisiana chef, highlighting a sophisticated approach to his Cajun flair.
The Rayne native has worked in the kitchens of Emeril Lagasse, was the chef de cuisine at the Cuvee, and opened Toups’ Meatery in 2012 near City Park in New Orleans with his wife, Amanda.
The popular Nola stop offers an original take on his native Cajun cuisine with a focus on meat, everything from bone marrow to homemade sausage.
Born and raised in Rayne, Toups credits his family’s food and cooking experiences for his love of preparing food, in addition to his grandmothers for the traditional base of his menu favorites.
The book and media winners will be announced on April 26, while the culinary award winners will be revealed at a gala in Chicago on May 6.
Toups was also named honoree of the 2018 Rayne Frog Festival. While there, he led the judging for the festival’s cooking contest and also assisted with judging of the Frog Leg Eating Contest.
