APTC to observe La. Arbor Day by planting live oak

A live oak will be planted in observance of Louisiana Arbor Day at 10 a.m. on Jan. 21 at the Acadia Parish Tourist Information Center.
The public is invited to attend the tree-planting ceremony to learn more about the live oak species and its importance to soil and air quality, storm protection, and erosion prevention.
“We take our live oaks for granted in Louisiana,” said Bob Thibodeaux, environmentalist and owner of Bob’s Tree Preservation. “Our Acadian ancestors were stewards of the environment, and we need to learn from them.”
Thibodeaux, who will be a guest speaker at the ceremony, has grown thousands of live oaks by collecting acorns from the highest quality and longest living live oaks in Louisiana. Of the thousands of these saplings, one is to be donated to the Acadia Parish Tourist Commission for the Louisiana Arbor Day ceremony.
Thibodeaux hopes to plant other trees in Lake Charles to replace those that were destroyed by Hurricane Laura.
The Acadia Parish Tourist Commission has partnered with Thibodeaux to host the ceremony and raise awareness to the public about the value of trees.
“The live oak is a powerful symbol of South Louisiana and its resilience,” said Nancy Loewer, executive director of the Acadia Parish Tourist Commission. “We are grateful that this iconic tree will provide shade and beauty for tourists who visit our center for years to come.”

Jury commits ARPA dollars to rural water corp.

Henry, Comeaux re-elected to 3rd terms as president, vice president

The Acadia Parish Police Jury has committed $1.107 million for use by the Mire Branch Water Corp. for the construction of a new water tower. The funding will come from the first installment of the parish’s American Rescue Plan Act funding.
In other action Tuesday night, Chance Henry and Steve Comeaux were re-elected president and vice president, respectively. Henry was re-elected by acclimation. Comeaux defeated Walter Andrus by a vote of 5-2.
Voting for Comeaux were Jeff Morgan, Gordon Ray Morgan, A.J. “Jay” Credeur, Pat Daigle and Comeaux. Jimmie Pellerin and Andrus voted for Andrus.
This will be the third consecutive year of service for each of the officers.
Acadia Parish is projected to receive nearly $12.1 million in ARPA funding distributed directly from the U.S. Treasury to the parish in two “tranches.” The first tranche was received in mid-2021; the second is expected in June or July.
There are four eligible uses for the ARPA funds:
• To respond to the public health emergency or its negative economic impacts, including assistance to household, small businesses and nonprofits, or aid to impacted industries such as tourism, travel and hospitality;
• To respond to workers performing essential work during the COVID-19 public health emergency by providing premium pay to eligible workers;
• For the provision of government services to the extent of the reduction in revenue due to the COVID-19 public health emergency relative to revenues collected in the most recent full fiscal prior to the emergency; and
• To make necessary investments in water, sewer or broadband infrastructure.
Funds can be used to cover project costs incurred on or after March 3 but before Dec. 31, 2024. The project must be completed by Dec. 31, 2026.
Larry Cramer, chief professional civil engineer with Sellers and Associates, Inc., explained that the Louisiana legislature passed Act 410 of the 2021 Regular Session which created the Water Sector Fund, allocating $300 million of the state’s ARPA funds to be used to fund the water Sector Fund. Applications for that money will be received by the state beginning Aug. 1 and require at least a local 25% match to be considered.
The state recommended that local entities, such as the police jury, utilize their ARPA funds as the match for these applications.
Total cost of the Mire Branch Water Corp.’s project is $3.81 million.
“We’re asking the police jury for 41% in hopes that it will increase our points with the state,” Cramer said. If the application is approved, the state will put up the remaining $2.7 million from its Water Sector Funds, he added.
“It’s a matter of getting a commitment to basically fund the project, and time is of the essence,” Chris Savoy, treasurer of the corporation said, adding that the Mire Branch Water Corp. is the “largest and fastest-growing” water corporation in the parish.
The jury voted unanimously to commit the funding amount requested -- $1,107,738.
The parish has already committed $3 million of the first $6 million in ARPA funding to broadband infrastructure.

LSU’s Kevin Faulk selected for 2022 Class of College Football Hall of Fame

LSU running back Kevin Faulk, perhaps the greatest all-purpose player in the history of the Southeastern Conference, has been named to the 2022 College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation announced on Monday.
Faulk, who remains the SEC’s leader in career all-purpose yards and the school’s all-time leading rusher, becomes the 11th LSU player to enter the College Football Hall of Fame. He’s joined in the Hall Fame Class of 2022 by 17 players and three coaches.
A 1996 first-team all-American as an all-purpose player, Faulk still holds the all-time SEC record with 6,833 all-purpose yards, a mark that was fourth in FBS history when he finished his career. During that 1996 season, he led the SEC in all-purpose yards and ranked second in the league in rushing. Faulk followed up his all-America campaign by leading the SEC in rushing during both his junior and senior seasons, and he also topped the league in scoring as a senior. The three-time first-team All-SEC selection was the first player in LSU history to average more than 100 yards per game during his entire career.
Setting 11 school records by career’s end, Faulk still holds LSU career marks for rushing yards (4,577), rushing touchdowns (46), all-purpose yards (6,833) and 100-yard rushing games (22). The 1995 SEC Freshman of the Year ranks fourth in the conference in career rushing yards and is tied for third in career rushing touchdowns. A two-time LSU MVP, Faulk led the Tigers to two top-15 final rankings and three bowl victories, earning offensive MVP honors following the 1995 Independence Bowl after setting LSU bowl records with 234 rushing yards and 271 all-purpose yards. Faulk owns LSU’s single-game all-purpose yards record (376 vs. Houston, 1996), and ranks fifth in school history with 832 punt return yards. He is also a member of the LSU Athletics and State of Louisiana Sports halls of fame.
Taken in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, Faulk spent his entire 13-year career with the franchise. The 2016 New England Patriots Hall of Fame inductee led the team to three Super Bowl titles (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX), and he holds the franchise record for career all-purpose yards.
Following his pro career, Faulk served as an assistant football coach from 2013-17 at his former high school, Carencro High School. He then served on the coaching staff at his alma mater, LSU, from 2018-21. He annually hosts a free youth football camp in Louisiana, and he founded the Kevin Faulk Foundation to support youth. He is the cousin of 2017 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Marshall Faulk from San Diego State.
Faulk will become the 11th former LSU player enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame joining end Gaynell “Gus” Tinsley (Class of 1956), end Ken Kavanaugh Sr. (Class of 1963), halfback Abe Mickal (Class of 1967), quarterback Doc Fenton (Class of 1971), safety Tommy Casanova (Class of 1995), halfback Billy Cannon (Class of 2009), halfback Jerry Stovall (Class of 2010), running back Charles Alexander (Class of 2012), quarterback Bert Jones (Class of 2016), and defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey (Class of 2020).
