Frog Frog Festival, upcoming projects talked at Chamber board meeting

RAYNE - Returning from a summer hiatus, the board of directors of the Rayne Chamber of Commerce faced a full agenda for its September meeting.
Committee reports included a report from Frog Festival Chairman Jeremy Lavergne for the 2019 Frog Festival to be held in May.
Lavergne gave a brief report of the 2018 festival, and presented a few changes that will need adjusting for next year’s event.
The 2019 Frog Festival budget was approved as submitted by Board President Nikki Link.
A brief outline of the anticipated lineup of musical entertainment was also discussed with a final lineup to be announced soon.
Lavergne also shared with the audience of the recent attendance of the Frog Festival Committee to the Delcambre Shrimp Festival to exchange and learn of new ideas for the festival.
Link announced the new chairman of the Rayne Farmer’s Market, Marietta Leonards Sikat. Chamber members were noted of who will assist with the September market.
“We have a good number of vendors signed up for this month’s market,” stated Sikat.
Dr. Eddie Palmer reported that the OST Committee is in the process of planning the annual “OST Day” observance on Saturday, Nov. 3, at and around The Depot Square. Antique cars, period dress, food and other activities have been planned. More definite plans will be announced as they are finalized, according to Palmer.
Palmer also gave a positive report of the OST Networking Conference held in Rayne. “We welcomed over 60 visitors from the state and have received positive reviews,” stated Palmer. “We’ve also had a number of cities volunteer to host the next conference.”
Concerning the recently completed Creative Placemaking when ideas were shared and presented during the three meetings held throughout the parish, Palmer gave a brief report. Still in the planning stages, he announced the local committee will participate in a phone conference on Sept. 11, followed by a parish-wide meeting on Sept. 16-17 with the engineering company.
Chamber Executive Director Fran Bihm gave a report of summer activities she attended including the Miss Rayne Pageant and a number of ribbon cutting held throughout Rayne.
New business discussed:
• Business of the Quarter nominations for the Oct. 25th Business After Hours planned at the Rayne Building and Loan;
• Approve budget for LACCE Conference;
• Host a political forum during the month of October with co-chairmen selected;
• Approve rental of ticket booth to the Downs Syndrome Association; and
• Elected Jeremy Lavergne to the Board, taking the place of Maggie Reed who resigned over the summer.
Reminders included Farmer’s Market Sept. 8, Business After Hours Oct. 25, KBON Music Fest Oct. 5-7, and Germanfest Oct. 6-7 in Roberts Cove.
The meal for the noon chamber meeting was provided by Southwind Healthcare & Rehabilitation, Southwind Senior Living Suites and Encore Healthcare & Rehabilitation, represented by Michele Veillon.

Rayne High Homecoming celebrations continue

Students, faculty and alumni are enjoying the traditional events and programs associated with Rayne High’s homecoming week.
Special honorees during the 2018 Homecoming activities will include classmates of classes ending in “8”, in addition to members of the newly named Homecoming Court, including 11 seniors.
Today’s events include the traditional Homecoming Parade. The event invites all RHS classes and alumni to participate in the 6 p.m. parade, following its usual route from Rayne Central Kindergarten and ending at Rayne High School where the annual community-wide pep rally and Powder Puff Game will be held and enjoyed by all.
Also invited to participate in this year’s parade are all Rayne High former students, who will join this year’s Homecoming Court who will take their honored place.
All parade participants are needed in line by 5:30 p.m. at Central Kindergarten and must be ready for the 6 p.m. start.
Friday will have a full schedule of events, including the Annual Alumni Reception at 10 a.m. in school library with alumni treated to school tours and refreshments.
The Annual Homecoming Pep Rally will be held at 2 p.m. in the school’s north gym complete with football players, Homecoming Court and escorts introduced and honored.
Homecoming Court introductions will begin at 6:45 p.m. prior to the Homecoming Football Game at Wolf Stadium. Kickoff for the Homecoming Game is 7 p.m. as the Wolves will take on Erath High.
A special halftime program will include the introduction of the Homecoming Court and crowning of the new 2018 Homecoming Queen.
The group of 11 seniors honored as members of this year’s Homecoming Court are:
Jayla Kaitlyn Aucoin, daughter of Dana Aucoin;
Hanna Shelby Babineaux, daughter of Mitchell and Simonne Babineaux;
Jessi Rian Cary, daughter of Lynette and Danny Guidry and Zachary and Nicole Cary;
Alexis Page Hayes, daughter of Nancy and Scotty Hayes;
Jade Nicole Louviere, daughter of Angela and Blake Louviere;
Eleana Pearl Matte, daughter of Celeste Matte and Toby Matte;
Taiya Le’Rae McDowell, daughter of Raven Babineaux and Raymond McDowell;
Emma Marie Pastor, daughter of Chad and Julie Pastor;
Janette Wade, daughter of Jeffery and Sondrea Wade;
Caroline Marie Zimmerman, daughter of Jack and Gayle Zimmerman; and
Court Sweetheart Camille Boudreaux, daughter of Ben and Fara Boudreaux.
Alumni and honored classes will also be photographed by the local newspaper.

Leonard “Soul Dog/Lenny” McClelland

RAYNE - Leonard “Soul Dog/Lenny” McClelland, 64, was born December 17, 1953, in Rayne, Louisiana to Freddie and Delia Jones McClelland.
A native of Rayne, he was a resident of Lake Charles where he was a member of United Christian Fellowship Church and an employee of St. Martin De Porres Multi Care Center for 27 years.
He departed this life Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at 11 a.m. in a local hospital.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Lachandra Semien McClelland; six daughters, Alonna (Charles) Ford, Sherina Arceneaux, Jeanetta Williams, Jhvaylee, Jada and Alaiha Jack; two sons, Leonard McClelland Jr. and Rayneldo (Annie) McClelland; two sisters, Joyce Etienne and Rachel McClelland Decluiet; two brothers, Fredrick and Percy McClelland; 20 grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Starlight Baptist Church located at 206 Webb Street in Rayne with Pastor Nathan Stevens officiating.
Burial will be at Community Garden Cemetery under the direction of James Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 21, between 5-9 p.m. at Messiah Baptist Church in Lake Charles and also on Saturday, Sept. 22, prior to the funeral from betwen 8-10 a.m. at Starlight Baptist Church in Rayne.
Funeral services are under the direction of James Funeral Home, Lake Charles.
