Donald “Don” Alleman has announced his candidacy for the office of Chief of Police for the City of Crowley.
Alleman has over 37 years of law enforcement experience and served as Crowley’s Chief of Police from 1995 through 2002. He is past President of the Louisiana Association of Chief’s of Police in 2001 and 2002. He is certified by the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement through the Louisiana Homicide Investigator’s Association as a Certified Homicide Investigator.
In announcing his candidacy, Alleman says, “I have devoted my life to my chosen profession of law enforcement. The Chief of Police position is a full-time job and it’s the only job that I will have as your Chief of Police.”
After being honorably discharged from the United States Army on October 10, 1980, Alleman began his career at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (UL-Lafayette) on October 20, 1980, as a communications officer and was certified as a police officer at the Acadiana Law Enforcement Training Academy in August of 1981. He then moved on to the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Department as a Patrolman and moved up through the ranks as Shift Supervisor. In 1990 he was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division.
In 1994, he ran for the office of Crowley Chief of Police and after winning that election served as Chief of Police for the City of Crowley from 1995 through 2002. He then moved forward as a Criminal Investigator for the Louisiana State Attorney General’s Office, working in Medicaid Fraud and Elderly Abuse in Nursing Homes.
Alleman then went to Iraq and served as an International Police Officer in training and logistics. In April of 2005 he signed a contract with Civilian Police International and went to Kosovo (former Yugoslavia) and was a criminal investigator in the Serious Crimes Investigation Section (SCIS). In November of 2005, he was promoted to Deputy Chief of that unit and supervised over 70 international police officers from countries around the world and interpreters. He served as Deputy Chief until Kosovo declared its independence in July 2006. He then transferred into the Counter-Terrorism Unit as an investigator and was declared an Expert Criminal Investigator by the head of that division in his United Nations Departure Assessment in April 2007.
Upon completing two full contracts, he returned to the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office as a patrolman in May 2007, and in April 2008 was transferred in the Criminal Investigations Division. In June 2012, a new position was created in the town of Church Point for the position of Criminal Investigator. He served as the only Criminal Investigator for that town until the position was removed in October 2017.
Alleman was nominated in July of 1999 to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, the most prestigious law enforcement training academy in the world, which trains police managers/officers from countries all over the globe. He graduated in September of 1999 with training in Executive Management in Law Enforcement, Interview and Interrogations, Juvenile Crimes and Gangs, Forensic Science Overview, Supreme Court Decisions, Computer Training and Physical Fitness. He is a 1989 graduate of the Louisiana State University Advanced Law Enforcement Training Academy for Supervisors. Through his 37-year career in law enforcement, Alleman has acquired thousands of hours in all fields of law enforcement training. He has experience in Administrative Management in Law Enforcement requiring budgeting and accounting, personnel management and deployment, internal affairs investigations, community relations and diversity training, technology advancements, fleet management, criminal investigations, patrol and communications.
In running for the office of Chief of Police, Alleman says, “I will be walking house to house asking you, the public, to tell me the problems that you are having individually. I promise you that when elected as your Chief of Police, you will get a quick response to your complaints, any and all complaints will be answered in person by a police officer unless otherwise specified by you, more visibility of patrol units, firmness, but compassion in dealing with each and every one of you on an individual basis, and above all fairness in all matters. Not all problems can be solved by the police department, but an attempt will be made to serve you in the most professional manner possible and try to solve them or direct you to another city department that may solve them.
“We continue to have an ongoing problem in the area of drug use, illegal narcotics sales, juvenile crimes, and other criminal activities. This is not unique to the City of Crowley and I assure you that we will continue to combat these issues.
“I have continually fought for the rights of victims and also continually fought for the rights of the police officer to do his job effectively. In 2016, I was asked by a number of you citizens to return as your Chief of Police to fill the unexpired term of out-going Chief, who is now the Sheriff of Acadia Parish. I had to decline that request due to the fact that I gave my word and made a commitment to the Chief of Police of Church Point, that if he ran again in 2014 for re-election, I would stay working for four more years until his retirement. I made that commitment, gave him my word, and stuck to it. Being Chief of Police requires 100 percent dedication and you have my word that I will continue this dedication to all the citizens of Crowley.”
Don has been married to Freida Helo Alleman for 35 years.
