Elizabeth Zart Clement

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home for Elizabeth Zart Clement, 82, who died Monday, Aug. 5, 2019, at 5:50 a.m. at The Ellington in Rayne.
Mrs. Clement was a native of Fort Madison, Iowa, and longtime resident of Crowley. She owned/operated Maison D’Zart Gallery in Crowley. She was a past member of the St. Michael Church Parish Council, St. Michael Church Mixed Choir and Attakapas Study Club.
Fr. Brent Smith, parochial vicar of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, will officiate for the services.
The family requests visitation from 12:15 p.m. Thursday to service time with a rosary being recited at 12:30 p.m.
Private inurnment will be in Estherwood Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Clement is survived by one daughter, Katherine R. Clement of Crowley; one son, Leo M. Clement and wife Sarah Romero Clement of Red Oak, Texas; one sister, Dr. Ann Lopez of Hope Mills, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Joshua Lambert, Asheton Lambert, Emma Lambert, Olivia Clement Black, Zoe Clement and Caroline Clement; one great-grandchild, James Black; and four godchildren, Dr. Ann Lopez, Sophia Lopez, Joshua Lambert, and Emma Lambert.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Clement; her parents, Leo Zart and Madeline Malloy Zart; two sisters, Joyce Williams and Debbie Barlow.

Betty Hanks Guidry

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church for Betty Hanks Guidry, 86, who passed away at Silver Bluff Village in Canton, North Carolina, on July 30, 2019.
Fr. Mikel Polson, pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, will be officiating for the services.
The family is requesting visiting hours to be held Thursday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home in Crowley.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Pannell and husband Richard of Dry Prong; two sisters, Barbara Bridges of League City, Texas, Shirley Sylvia of Baytown, Texas; three brothers, Roger Hanks of Dayton, Texas, Ernie Hanks of Baytown, Texas, and Fred Hanks of Austin; and one grandson, Kyrick Pannell of Dry Prong.
Mrs. Guidry is preceded in death by her husband, Irving Guidry; her parents, Fred and Bertha Duhon Hanks; one brother, Woodrow Hanks; and her granddaughter, Kylie Pannell.
Pallbearers will be Ernie Hanks, Jimmy Sylvia, Kyrick Pannell, Austin Berlin, Wesley Berlin and Tate Floyd.
Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Guidry, Chris Bridges, Fred Hanks and Roger Hanks.

Crime Stoppers looking for trailer thieves

Detectives with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating the theft of a livestock trailer that occurred the night of July 30 off of La. Hwy. 35 south of Branch.
The stolen trailer is described as a light-colored, four-horse bumper-pull trailer without a license plate. It was captured on video surveillance being pulled by a silver, four-door Chevrolet Silverado and followed south on La. 35 by a dark-colored, mid-sized sedan.
Two suspects were captured on video surveillance as they entered a local convenience store. Suspect one is described as a black male with a light complexion and a thin build wearing a white T-shirt.
Suspect 2 is a black female with a large build wearing a cap and light color shirt.
Anyone that can identify these suspects or has any information regarding this theft is urged to call the tips line at 789-TIPS / 789-8477 or download the P3 app on a mobile device to report tips anonymously. Callers will remain anonymous and can receive up to a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Rayne to host CFMA le Cajun Music Festival

Two days of music, entertainment planned at Rayne Civic Center

RAYNE - The 2019 Annual Le Cajun - CFMA Annual Cajun Awards and Music Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17, at the Rayne Civic Center.
Theme for the anticipated two-day event is Fier d’etre ‘Cadien (Proud to be Cajun).
The awards ceremony will be hosted by the Cajun-French Music Association of Louisiana, with Cajun musicians from throughout the area to be in attendance and honored.
The Le Cajun Award and Festival is a unique, two-day event will feature an awards ceremony honoring the best in Cajun music and Cajun musicians and includes a two-day dance festival with award winning Cajun bands providing the music.
The Grammy-style awards ceremony, to be held Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m., is sponsored by CFMA and includes awards for Band of the Year, Best Accordionist, Best Fiddler, Best Male and Female Vocalist, Song of the Year and Best Recording of the Year.
Highlighting the activities on Friday night will be the crowning of the new CFMA Queen.
A featured event at the annual festival will be the individuals to be inducted into the Cajun Music Hall of Fame.
The 2018 winners were Ervin “Dick” Richard, Johnny Sonnier and Lawrence and Judith Patin, owners of La Poussier Authentic Cajun Dance Hall in Breaux Bridge.
Also to be included during the festival is a large arts and crafts show where numerous hand-made and unique items can be purchased.
Friday will conclude with live Cajun music provided by Dylan Aucoin and the Judice Ramblers.
And don’t forget the anticipated accordion raffle, along with assorted concessions and auctions.
Doors open Saturday, Aug. 17, at 9:30 a.m. with introductions, accordion and fiddle contests, and live entertainment into the evening hours.
Highlighting the entertainment will be Cameron Dupuy & The Cajun Troubadors featuring an “All-Star Family Tradition Extravaganza.”
The Cajun French Music Association is a non-profit organization comprised of Cajuns and non-Cajuns whose purpose is to promote and preserve, not only Cajun music, but also various aspects of the Acadian Heritage.
The CFMA was founded in Basile in November of 1984 with Harry LaFleur of Eunice as its founder. Since its beginning of less than 30 persons, it has grown to a membership of approximately 2,000 families serving seven chapters in Louisiana and four chapters in the Cajun Region of Southeast Texas and one in Chicago.

Rayne Rec registration continues for football, volleyball

Registration is presently taking place for Rayne’s 2019 season of the city’s flag football and volleyball leagues, as announced by Rayne Recreation Director Dwayne Derise.
The volleyball program will be available for girls between 7-11 years of age (must be seven years but not turn 12 by Sept. 1, 2019). Volleyball tryouts will be held Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. for 7-8 year olds, then at 7 p.m. for 9-11 year olds at the Rayne Civic Center.
The Flag Football Program is for youngsters of the community (6-11 years of age). Pee-Wee League participants should be age 6 before Sept. 1, 2019 and Peanut League participants should be age 9 before Sept. 1, 2019. Flag football tryouts will be held at Kennedy Field on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 9 a.m. for Pee Wee League (6-8 years of age) then at 10:15 a.m. for Peanut League (9-11 years of age).
Parents can register their child at City Hall until Sept. 5 during regular business hours. Registration at the Green Room will be held between the hours of 5-6 p.m. on Aug. 12, 19, 26, Sept. 2, and also on the Saturdays between 9-10 a.m. on Aug. 17, 24, 31.
Registration is $20 per child, with a $10 late fee charged at the time of tryouts. Once uniforms are ordered, no registrations will be accepted.

Rayne High jamboree, season tickets available

Rayne High School football season tickets can be purchased in the school’s front office as announced by RHS Head Coach Kaine Guidry.
Season tickets are $50 for the five home games of the 2019 season (season tickets do not include playoffs). A $20 parking pass per two season tickets is also available for purchase.
In addition, tickets for the Acadia/Vermilion Parish Jamboree are on sale now at Rayne High with the Wolves participating o the second night of action.
Tickets are $5 each pre-sale. All pre-sale ticket proceeds remains at Rayne High -- please make your purchase now. Tickets at the gate are $8 and proceeds will be split between the four participating teams.
Abbeville High will host the second and final night of Jamboree action on Friday, Aug. 30, at J.H. Williams Stadium. Rayne and Kaplan will kick things off at 6:30 p.m. followed by the 8 p.m. contest between Church Point and Abbeville.

Barousse seeks re-election as Clerk of Court

Robert T. “Robby” Barousse has formally announced that he will be seeking re-election as Acadia Parish Clerk of Court on Saturday, Oct. 12.
“I am very humbled and honored to have served you over the past 19 years as your Clerk of Court with the assistance of my dedicated and incredible staff,” Barousse said. “As a fully Certified Clerk, I can keep abreast of changing times and serve you in the best way possible. Technology is always evolving, and it is our goal to offer public information, new and old, to the constituents of Acadia Parish, the State of Louisiana, and around the United States.
He continues: “Several big projects are ongoing to preserve and make our records accessible on our on-line service as well as on in-house public terminals. We have also joint ventured with the Acadia Parish Assessor’s Office to make public records documents pertaining to land available through the Assessor’s mapping program, which is what we consider the best in the state.
“The Clerk of Court’s Office is the central hub for working with the four main entities for the parish, those being are our office, the Sheriff’s office, the District Attorney’s office, and the Assessor’s office. Our working relationship is vital to putting the people of Acadia Parish in good hands with the best service and information possible.
“We also work closely with the Registrar of Voters office. We strive on an honest election process that starts from the Secretary of State all the way down through our office election night.
