Couple announce June 2 wedding
Toy D’Lane Carmouche of Lafayette and Johnell Celestine of Opelousas have announced their engagement and commitment to be wed on Saturday, June 2, at the International Rice Festival Building in a 3 p.m. ceremony.
The bride-to-be is the daughter of Myrtle R. Cain of Crowley and the late Joseph Alton Carmouche. Her grandparents are Beatrice Bashay Cain and the late Moses Cain Jr. and the late Theresa and Alton Carmouche.
Toy graduated from Crowley High School in 2006 and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies with applied sciences. She is currently employed as a supervising agent at Liberty National Life Insurance Co.
The prospective groom is the son of John Celestine of Opelousas and the late Rosella Celestine. His grandparents are the late Albert and Selena Johnson and the late Latyon and Lovenia Celestine.
Johnell is a 1998 graduate of Northwest High School in St. Landry Parish and obtained a degree in general studies from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2003. He is employed by the Evangeline Parish School Board.
Following their wedding, the couple will reside in Opelousas.
Ramona Anne McDonald

“Our final butterfly has left the nest to rest upon her Savior’s breast, and bid us all a fond farewell until we meet again.”
Ramona Anne McDonald, daughter of David McDonald and Mary Genevieve Grace McDonald, was born Oct. 1, 1956, in Crowley.
She passed away at 1:20 p.m. on May 14, 2018.
A life-time resident of Crowley, Ramona attended H.C. Ross Elementary School and graduates from H.C. Ross High School. She attended the University of Southwest Louisiana (USL) in Lafayette, where she studied laboratory technology.
A student of laboratory science, she worked in dialysis services for more than 15 years before the onset of her illness. In the final stages of her illness she required dialysis treatment.
Ramona was a caring and outspoken woman who spent her final years caring for and supporting her mother and best friend.
She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Mary Genevieve Grace McDonald; and her brother, Milfred Aaron McDonald.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Diane McDonald Okyere (2006), Julia Cathryn McDonald (2008) and Theresa McDonald Harmon (2009); and her maternal grandparents, Mildred Hawkins Grace and Aaron Grace Sr.
Ramona was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.
Joseph “Boogie” Charles
Funeral services for Joseph “Boogie” Charles will be held on Saturday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at Holy Temple Baptist Church in Crowley.
Joseph Charles, 77, died on Friday, May 18, 2018, at Encore Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Visitation was observed at the church at 8 a.m. until the time of service.
He was a proud and devoted husband and father who would help anyone in need.
Joseph Charles leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Hazel Charles; his daughter, Patricia Woods-Jackson (Marvin) of Crowley; sons, Anthony Scott of Dallas, Texas, Michael Scott of Elsmore, Kentucky, and Byron Scott of Crowley; son-in-law, Eddie Byers (Laine); and a host of aunts, uncles, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis Charles and Viola Roy; sisters, Elnetta Krout-Baily, Elnora Scott, Audrey Hawkins and Mary Lou Pettaway-Burke; brothers, Elridge “Freddie” Williams and Ernest Banks; daughter, Roslyn Elaine Scott Byers “Laine”; and a great-nephew, Reginald “Reggie” Hawkins.
Charles Lee Brackins
Charles L. Brackins, 66, of Houston, Texas passed away on Thursday, May 17th after a long illness. He was born in Crowley on January 6, 1952, graduated from Ross High in 1970, served in the US Air Force, worked in the construction industry in the Houston area until he was disabled in 2010. He quickly became a life-long resident of Houston and worshiped at several churches during his life including Gethsemane Missionary Baptist, New Mount Carmel Baptist, and, at the time of his death, Holy Bible Way Baptist Church.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents Johnson Brackins, Jr and Verneda Hebert Brackins and two older brothers, Johnson “Johnny” Brackins, III and Roy Brackins, Sr.
Surviving siblings are Verna B. Brackins, Donnie Brackins, and Gina Brackins of Crowley. Also, to cherish his memory are his loving and dearest friend and partner, Joslin Hickerson of Houston, to whom the family extends our warmest gratitude for her kind spirit, one godchild, Trudy Lorick of Crowley, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family would like to thank those that aided Charles in his time of need, especially his friends at Independence Hall, the Houston Police Dept., Carnes Funeral Homes, and the Harris County Bereavement Program.
Private funeral services will be at a later date in Houston with internment at a VA Cemetery in Texas. Carnes Funeral Home, 1102 Indiana St., South Houston (713) 943-2500 is entrusted with professional services.
