Selma Ann Abdella Cooper

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church for Selma Ann Abdella Cooper, 65, who died Saturday, May 19, 2018, in Texas.
Fr. Edward Duhon, priest in residence at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, will officiate for the services.
The family is requesting visiting hours to be held Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Billy John Cooper of Crowley; her daughter, Paula Ann Cooper Sigue and husband Shone of Pearland, Texas; her son, Bradley John Cooper and wife Stacey of League City, Texas; three siblings, Freddy Abdella, Patricia Wright, and Freida Smith; three grandchildren, Paige E. Sigue, Tyler C. Sigue and wife Cameron, and Hunter J. Sigue; her great-grandchild, Sterling N. Sigue; and numerous and nephews.
Mrs. Cooper is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Florida Naomi Abdella.

Genevieve Frey Leonards

Genevieve Frey Leonards left this earth to begin her walk with God on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at the age of 85.
Genevieve was a loving wife, mother and grandmother known for her generosity, culinary talents, unbending faith and love for her family. She was a well-respected member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Pointe Coupee Parish Community, and the Catholic Daughters of America.
Genevieve was born Nov. 11, 1932, in Mowata, the daughter of the late Annie and Edward Frey.
She is survived by her six children, Kenneth, Keith, Karl, Kevin and wife Tammy, Kathy Laurent and husband Jimmie, and Karen Leonards; 13 grandchildren, Lane Leonards and wife Lisa, Lyndon Leonards and wife Penny, Kristy Bergeron and husband Lester, Lee Leonards and wife Casey, Annie Morrison and husband Dylan, Brandy Mills and husband Kevin, Lauren Johnson and husband Boyd, Nathan Leonards and wife Nicole, Gennie Bazer, Brook Devillier and husband Corey, Jessica Bazer, Mary Katherine Lemoine and husband Jordan and Kelli Bazer; as well as 17 great-grandchildren. She is survived in death by her three sisters Rita Frey Hebert, Mildred Frey Boudreaux and Sadie Frey Thevis.
She is preceded in death by her husband Edwin Leonards; and brothers Fred and Edward Frey Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hope Charities in New Roads or St. Vincent de Paul Bishop Ott Shelter in Baton Rouge.
Visiting at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Morganza, on May 25, 2018 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. then Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Ann’s.
Entombment in the church mausoleum.
Niland’s Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Genevieve’s loving care takers in the last years of her life: Glender Long, Cassie Dailey, Elaine Long, Jada Bowman, Lakeview Manor in New Roads and their staff, and Pointe Coupee Hospice and nurse Cassie Silvio.

Acadia Parish Library summer reading program

The Acadia Parish Library will present its summer reading program “Libraries Rocks” at all branch libraries between May 24 and July 17.
Registration at the Rayne Library begins May 24 for the summer reading program.
Story hour will at the Rayne location will be held every Thursday between June 14 - July 12 betwen 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Movies will be enjoyed every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. between June 12 - July 17 as announced by Rayen Librarian Trudy Ronkartz.
The Rayne Library schedule also includes Toddler Times every Monday at 10 a.m., Tweens and Teens Crafts every Wednesday at 2 p.m., Adult Bingo, Legos Times at 10 a.m. June 27 - July 25, and children bingo at 2 p.m. June 8 - July 13.
Come and join the Acadia Parish Library system for the parish-wide kickoff “Zoo-Zoom, The Little Zoo on Wheels” for the awesome animal show featuring snakes, lizards and more. The show will be held at the Acadia Parish Adult Education Center (former Walmart Store) on June 6 at 10 a.m. Children will learn about farm animals from trained professionals, and even be able to get up close and personal with some reptile friends. Admission is free.
In conclusion of the 2018 Summer Reading Program, youngsters are invited to attend the “Grand Finale” of Harvey Rabbit and Friends at the Rayne High School north gym. The fun begins at 10 a.m. on July 17. Everyone’s invited to attend.

Children’s fishing derby set June 2 in Rayne

The 2018 Annual Children’s Catch & Release Fishing Derby to be held on Saturday, June 2, at the ponds located on the grounds of Maison d’Memoire (Ken & Lynn Guidry) at 8450 Roberts Cove Road (Hwy. 98) just north of Rayne.
The City of Rayne has again joined with a number of community partners for the event, including The Acadiana Sportman’s League, Rayne Lions Club, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Maison d’Memoire.
The event will take place between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. with the awards ceremony to follow. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m.
This catch and release fishing event is being held for children up to 15 years of age with category breakdowns in different age groups. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the day.
Activities planned include a short briefing on the rules and guidelines for the day’s activities, an educational packet containing information on tying a knot, baiting a hook, identification of fish, general fishing safety and an approximate 2 hour fishing derby with the assistance from members of Acadiana Sportsman League.
First aid stations will be on site tentatively staffed by members of the Rayne Volunteer Fire Departments First Responder Team.
A light lunch of hot dogs and cold drinks will be available, with the assistance of the Rayne Lions Club, for those enjoying the day’s activities.
Participants must bring their own fishing poles and are encouraged to bring suntan lotion, bug repellent, lawn chairs and hats for protection from the sun.
While there is no fee to fish, pre-registration is a MUST! When calling, you will need to have your child(ren)’s name, age and t-shirt size.
