Beta Sigma Phi to host Project Pink, 2018 honoree announced

RAYNE - Preceptor Alpha Chi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi announces the 20th annual “Project Pink”, Breast Cancer Awareness event, to be held Saturday, June 2, at the Rayne Civic Center.
The day for the 2018 observance will be dedicated to the memory of Karen Faulk Habetz.
Karen passed away from cancer on March 21, 2018. She was a lifetime resident of Acadia Parish and graduate of Crowley High School Class of 1975. She retired from the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Department after 34 years of service. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother who will be missed by all who knew her. She enjoyed family gatherings, sewing, the beach and traveling.
An invitation is also being extended to all breast cancer survivors to join the day-long event.
Bring your “PINK” hats all decorated for judging. Prizes will be awarded.
Raffle tickets are currently on sale for the “Angel of Hope, 12” Seraphim Angel valued at $175. This is a numbered, limited edition sculpted and delicately hand painted angel. She wears a pink ribbon and sash to represent the commitment to bringing the world closer to a cure. The winner will have a choice between the angel or $150 cash. There will also be numerous other prizes given in the raffle, in addition to door prizes and a silent auction.
The 10th annual “Miss Project Pink” pageant will also be held at this time. The queens will hold titles for a year and their primary responsibility will be to inform others throughout the state about the event and invite them to participate in this well-known “Breast Cancer Awareness” event. Door admission is $5 for adults, $3 school age children and little ones four years and under will be admitted free.

2018 Flower Show hosted by Garden Club

The Rayne Garden Club hosted its 2018 Annual Flower Show, “Kaleidoscope of Color,” on Friday, May 4, at The Green Room of the Civic Center Complex. All floral designs displayed a “kaleidoscope” color theme.
Chairperson Lisa Soileaux and Rayne Garden Club members welcomed guests during the public viewing and afternoon tea between the hours of 3-6 p.m. at the Green Room where floral designs and horticulture entries where on display.
Winners in their categories who followed the “Kaleidoscope of Color” theme noted in floral designs, included the following:
Designer’s Choice Overall Award: Chris Simpson.
Miniature Designs: 1st place Sepha Guidry, 2nd place Josette Habetz, 3rd place Dianne Sonnier, honorable mention Margaret Comeaux.
Creative Line Design: 1st place Chris Simpson, 2nd place Judy Guidry, 3rd place Julia Breaux, honorable mention Martha Pierret.
Traditional Mass Design: 1st place Lisa Soileaux, 2nd place Desiree Casey, 3rd place Jeanette Daigle, honorable mention Fran Bihm.
Horticulture
Overall horticultural winners in Division II of the entire flower show were:
Award of Horticultural Excellence (Best Overall entry) - Martha Pierret;
Award of Merit in Section A: Fran Bihm;
Award of Merit in Section B: Dianne Sonnier;
Award of Merit in Section E: Jeanette Daigle; and
Award of Merit in Section F: Martha Pierret.
Special thanks to the City of Rayne for their assistance for this year’s flower show, judges, in addition to the many visitors in attendance.

Rayne High School graduates 144, awards presented

Rayne High School graduated a total of 144 seniors during the 2018 commencement exercises held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, May 19, in the Rayne High north gym.
Highlight of the commencement ceremonies was the naming of Darian Thomas and Kaitlyn Barron as Mr. and Miss RHS of 2018. Making the presentation was RHS Principal John Prudhomme.
Also awarded during the morning commencement was the distinguished American Legion’s scholastic award from Arceneaux Post 77, Rayne. Receiving that honor were Kendal Edmond and Damarcus James presented by Post 77 Commander David Simon.
The valedictory address was delivered by all eight seniors completing their high school careers “With Highest Distinction” medals (at least 4.0 GPA).
Graduating “With Highest Distinction” were Lindsey Batten (4.0714), Leah Hollier (4.0408), Kylee Elkins (4.0364), Darian Thomas (4.0333), Kaitlyn Barron (4.000), Damarcus James (4.000), Peyton Richard (4.000) and Grant Trahan (4.000).
During Friday afternoon’s Class Day Awards Program, students completing their high school studies with a GPA of 3.6-3.9 were presented gold honor cords as they graduated “With Distinction.” Those awarded were Victoria Royer (3.9655), Kennedie Bourgeois (3.9643), Kyle Dupuis (3.8966), Corinne Dorsett (3.8824), Mallorey Dupuis (3.8621), Kendal Edmond (3.8621), Zachary Broussard (3.7895), Lance Kibodeaux (3.7586), Ariel Webster (3.75), Skylar Gary (3.7241), Jordan McCrory (3.7193), Trinity Axtell (3.6897) and Lauren Runner (3.6333).
Students completing their high school studies with a GPA of 3.2-3.599 were presented white honor cords as they graduated “With Honor.” Those awarded were Madalyn Dupont (3.4643), Emily Castille (3.451), Canaan Olivier (3.4483), Victoria Leger (3.3846), Adrieanna Meche (3.375), Zoie Veillon (3.3704), Hailey Matte (3.3214), John Mire (3.3214) and Cooper Simon (3.2037).
