RAYNE - Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Church for Sheila Roberts, 64, who died May 11, 2018, at Acadia General Hospital in Crowley.
Services will be conducted by Christopher Curtis.
Interment will be in Community Garden Cemetery.
On February 11, 1954, Sheila D. Roberts was born to Russell and Meritha Domingue in Rayne.
Sheila was a faithful member of the Shrine of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church where she taught CCD, was a member of the choir and belonged to several organizations. She also volunteered her time and talents to the youth at Starlight Baptist Church and throughout the community.
Sheila was a member of the Gospel Express Choir, choreographed praise dances and helped organize plays. In 2014, she founded the Unity Committee where her mission was to bring the community together to uplift and encourage youth and recognize the efforts of others whose goal was to bring about change and betterment. She was a strong force in the community and was loved and cherished by all who encountered her.
Sheila’s true devotion and commitment were to God and her family. She was a homemaker, a seamstress, a caregiver, a mother to the motherless, a confidante, a counselor and a friend to all.
She is survived by her sons, Troy Roberts and Tony Roberts; daughters, Tonya Roberts and Tarra Charles; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her father, Russell Domingue; mother, Meritha Domingue; and nine siblings.
She was preceded in death by Tony G. Roberts Sr; son, Tony G. Roberts Jr.; brother, Daniel Domingue; and great-grandson, Lawrence Red.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 26, at Abundant Life Church from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Betty Ann Prejean Bourque
MIRE - A Mass of Christian Burial for Betty Ann Prejean Bourque, age 75, will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 10:00 AM in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Mire. Reverend Monsignor Russell Harrington will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow in Assumption of the BVM Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM in Gossen Funeral Home, Rayne, with a rosary being recited at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM in the funeral home.
Mrs. Bourque passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 in St. Joseph Hospice Carpenter House, Lafayette.
A lifelong resident of Lafayette Parish, Mrs. Bourque was a 1960 graduate of Rayne High School, where she earned the title of Valedictorian. Following her marriage, she and her husband, Patrick Bourque, lived in Dallas, TX and Lake Charles before returning to Lafayette.
Mrs. Bourque and her husband were the original owners of Pat's Grocery on Moss Street in Lafayette. She worked at Iberia Bank in Scott for twenty-five years until her retirement, after which she spent her time caring for sick relatives. Mrs. Bourque enjoyed working alongside her husband as he grew vegetables and beautiful roses. She was a wonderful cook, and loved to prepare Sunday dinner for family gatherings. Her greatest joy in life was caring for and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her sons, Michael Bourque and wife, Emy of Lafayette, and Mitchell Bourque and wife, Janice of Lafayette; daughters, Susan Boudreaux and husband, Gregory of Broussard, and Christina Huval and husband, Kirk of Lafayette; brother, Louis Robert Prejean and wife Mary Ann of Rayne; sister, Jenny Arceneaux of Mire; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Preceding Mrs. Bourque in death were her husband of 56 years, Patrick Bourque; sisters, Bonnie Melancon and Katherine Broussard; and brother, John Terry Prejean.
Serving as pallbearers are Mrs. Bourque's grandsons, Joshua Bourque, Alex Bourque, Austin Bourque, Riley Bourque, Anthony Boudreaux, Quinton Boudreaux, and Jeremiah Huval. Named as honorary pallbearer is Michael Boudreaux. Serving as giftbearers are Mrs. Bourque's granddaughters, Maria Bourque, Sarah Bourque, Elizabeth Bourque, Evelyn Bourque, and Ella Huval; and serving as readers are Alex Bourque and Austin Bourque.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the following for their compassionate care of Mrs. Bourque: the staffs of Courtyard Manor Assisted Living, A.M.G. Specialty Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospice Carpenter House. They also wish to thank Miss. Linda Jeanbatiste for caring for both of their parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Assumption of the BVM Catholic Church in Mire.

Annette Stutes Bruner
RAYNE - Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at a 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne LA for Annette Stutes Bruner, 62, who died Thursday May 17, 2018 at The Crossing at Clarity Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA.
Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery #2, Mausoleum in Rayne, LA.
Rev. Clint Trahan, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morse, LA will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph S. Bruner and wife Erin of Baton Rouge, Steven M. Bruner and companion Lauren Credeur of Crowley, two grandchildren, Jon Thomas Bruner, Joseph Ford Bruner of Baton Rouge, mother, Gladys Bourque Stutes of Rayne, two sisters, Ellen M. Stutes of Rayne, Shirley Stutes Cook and husband Dave of Baton Rouge, two brothers, Richard D. Stutes and companion Baine Ryder of Youngsville, Charles J. Stutes and wife Elizabeth of New Iberia, sister in law, Nancy Bush Stutes of Hammond, numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by father, Joseph "Joe" Wilbert Stutes, brother, Darrell John Stutes, Sr., nephew, Benjamin "Ben" Stutes.
Annette was the Director of Nursing at St. Agnes Health Care in Breaux Bridge, LA for 20 plus years..
A Rosary will be prayed Friday, May 18, 2018 at 7:00 pm in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne LA.

Cole completes Academy training
Rayne Chief of Police Carroll J. Stelly announced today that another P.O.S.T. Certified police officer is now patrolling the streets of Rayne.
Desmond Cole graduated from the 119th Basic Academy at the Calcasieu Parish Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy in Lake Charles.
With 43 fellow officers representing 15 agencies in the five-parish area, these officers completed 510 hours of instruction in all phases of basic law enforcement.
Chief Stelly states, “I’m proud of the dedication and hard work Desmond has shown. It’s great that another Rayne citizen has chosen to protect and serve the community where he was born and raised.”
Post 77 plans annual Memorial Day program, guests invited
RAYNE - During the May meeting of Arceneaux Post 77, American Legion, held Tuesday evening at the local Legion Home, Commander David Simon reminded members of a number of upcoming special events.
Post 77 will host the 2017 annual Memorial Day program on Sunday, May 27, at 10:30 a.m. Special guests will include family members of veterans who have passed away during the past year, in addition to Gold Star family members. A guest speaker is also included on the morning’s agenda, in addition to the local Woodmen of the World chapter providing refreshments was announced by Chairman Ray Olinger. The general public is urged to attend.
During Tuesday’s meeting, it was voted upon to re-elect the sitting slate of officers to another term, with the exception of 2nd Vice to be held by Robley Moroux. The new slate of officers will be installed during the July meeting scheduled on July 10, one week later than usual due to the July 4th holiday.
Also to be include during the evening will be the installation of the new Auxiliary officers of Unit 77 and officers for the newly re-organized Sons of the Legion. The joint event will be hosted by the Auxiliares with start time slated for 7 p.m. at the local Legion Home.
Also to be included during the Installation Banquet is the awarding of the Law Enforcement Officer and membership awards.
The memorial report included the death of long-time legionnaire John Sidney Arceneaux.
The sick call list was given including Robert Comeaux.
Discussion was heard of the annual Boys State Program slated June 24-30 on the campus of Northwestern State University.
Commander Simon also announced on Wednesday, June 13, Post 77 will host the 2018 Boys and Girls State District Orientation slated prior to the summer event.
Discussion was held of the recently held annual spring fundraiser, a sausage poboy dinner sale held Sunday, April 8, at the Legion Home. Proceeds will help build up needed funds for events sponsored by Post 77 throughout the year. Special thanks were extended to all who assisted with the program and to all who made purchases or donations.
Commander Simon reported of the recent weekend musical entertainment held at the Legion Home, in addition to a number of events planned in the coming weeks.
He also gave a reminder for awards to be presented by Post 77 for end of the school year awards programs to be held at local and area schools. Legionnaires will make award presentations at four local schools.
Legion school awards were ordered and a complete list of Post 77 legionnaires who will make presentations during the end of the school year award programs.
Following the maintenance report including projects and repairs recently completed at the Legion Home, Commander Simon discussed the upcoming 7th District Convention scheduled June 7-10 in Alexandria.
Michael Pastor reminded everyone of the annual Frog Festival Blood Drive and asked everyone to make a much-needed blood donation.
Ray Olinger gave the membership report of 184 locally in addition to on-line dues that he has not received as of date.
Commander Simon reminded anyone who would like to make a take-out order purchase at the Legion’s kitchen by the Auxiliary can do so by calling the Legion Home at 334-4774.
With no further business to come before the Post, the meeting was concluded and meal was served by the Legion cooks.
Rayne's Beta Sigma Phi to host Project Pink, honoree announced
RAYNE - Preceptor Alpha Chi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi announces the 20th annual “Project Pink”, Breast Cancer Awareness event, to be held Saturday, June 2, at the Rayne Civic Center.
The day for the 2018 observance will be dedicated to the memory of Karen Faulk Habetz. An invitation is being extended to all breast cancer survivors to join the day-long event.
Bring your “PINK” hats all decorated for judging. Prizes will be awarded.
Raffle tickets are currently on sale for the “Angel of Hope, 12” Seraphim Angel valued at $175. This is a numbered, limited edition sculpted and delicately hand painted angel. She wears a pink ribbon and sash to represent the commitment to bringing the world closer to a cure. The winner will have a choice between the angel or $150 cash. There will also be numerous other prizes given in the raffle, in addition to door prizes and a silent auction.
The 10th annual “Miss Project Pink” pageant will also be held at this time. The queens will hold titles for a year and their primary responsibility will be to inform others throughout the state about the event and invite them to participate in this well-known “Breast Cancer Awareness” event. Door admission is $5 for adults, $3 school age children and little ones four years and under will be admitted free.
The “Children’s Categories” (those younger than 13) will begin with registration at 9 a.m. and competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. Attire will be sportswear. Entry fee for these age groups will be $40 prior registration and $50 at the door.
Children’s categories are as follows: Baby Project Pink (0 – 11 months); T’Nincy Project Pink (12 – 23 months); Toddler Project Pink (2 years); Tiny Project Pink (3 – 4 years); Petite Project Pink (5 – 6 years); Little Project Pink (7 – 9 years); and Deb Project Pink (10 – 12 years).
The “Senior Categories” (those over 13 years of age) will begin with registration at 12 noon and competition will begin at 12:30 p.m.. Attire will be formal wear. The competition will not have interviews but will include stage presentation only. Entry fee for these age groups will be $50 prior registration and $60 at the door. The Senior Categories are as follows: Junior Project Pink (13 -14 years); Teen Project Pink (15 – 16 years); Miss Project Pink (17 – 23 years); Ms. Project Pink (24 – 39 years); and Lady Project Pink (40 years and over).
There will be an optional “Photogenic Award” in each category. Those wishing to participate will turn in their photo and a $5 fee per photo, during proper registration periods.
Pink ribbon custom designed crowns and embroidered cotton banners will be awarded for all age divisions royalty.

Preston J., Flora Ross Breaux honored on 50th anniversary
RAYNE - Preston J and Flora Ross Breaux of Rayne were honored on Sunday, May 13, 2018, during an anniversary social held in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary.
The couple was married on May 13, 1968. Bridal attendants were Linda Arceneaux and Russell Lanclos.
Mrs. Breaux is the former Flora Ross, daughter of the late Percy Eli and Vera Ross. She was a food service associate.
Mr. Breaux is the son of the late Leo and Eucharist Breaux and is self-employed.
The couple was honored during a social held at their home hosted by Bridgette Breaux Potier, Glenn Deville and Lilly Potier.
The couple and guests also enjoyed an outting at Deano’s Restaurant in Lafayette.
A special treat was a double-layered anniversary cake iced in white buttercream with yellow trim and sunflowers.
For the special occasion, Mrs. Breaux wore a ruffle-trimmed blouse over black pants, while her beau selected black slacks with a blue dress shirt.
The couple have two daughters, Bridgette Breaux Potier of Rayne and Stacy Breaux Lavergne, also of Rayne.
They are also the proud grandparents of Lilly Potier, Ashley Lavergne, Joshua Lavergne, Daniel Lavergne, Benjamin Lavergne, Sarah Lavergne, Hannah Lavergne, Jonathan Lavergne, Matthew Lavergne and Simien Lavergne.
