OPH to offer ‘Sex, Truth and Consequences’ class

July 11 session to be held at ETCFE Learning

The Office of Public Health, in conjunction with Woman’s Foundation, will present a “Sex, Truth and Consequences” class at the Empowering the Community for Excellence Learning Center in Crowley on Wednesday, July 11.
There is no charge for the class, which is open to teens ages and 15-18, as well as adults.
Separate classes will be held for boys and girls.
The class will provide a realistic view of the results of choosing to be sexually active, including pregnancy and how it occurs, the consequences of teen pregnancy and the costs of taking care of a baby, as well as information on sexually transmitted infections.
The class will also include discussions on sexting, peer pressure and sex in the media. Participants will learn about making good decisions, morals, values and setting personal goals.
The class will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The ETCFE Learning Center is located at 304 West Hutchinson Avenue.

Waver Christine “Peggy” Devlin

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Crowley.
After living a full, earthly life, rich in love and kindness, Waver Christine Devlin, 84, began her homeward journey to be with our Lord on Thursday, June 28, 2018.
Born on Nov. 20, 1933, in Crowley, to beloved parents Freddie and Della Francis, Waver — aka Peggy — was raised in Crowley until she relocated and settled in San Antonio, Texas.
Her style led to a career in retail, where she worked at boutiques and department stores. She was the first African-American woman to work as a cashier at the Woolworths in San Antonio, Texas.
Waver is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Alvin Francis and Freddie “Minnie” Francis; and her sons, James Bernard and Michael Bernard. 
Survivors to cherish her memory include her son, Aubry “P-Nut” Joseph Bernard of San Antonio, Texas; daughters-in-law, Cynthia Bernard and Beverly Smith of San Antonio, and Barbara “Gail” Onezine of Crowley; her grandchildren, Theresa Christian, Marcus Walker,  Cedric Thomas Smith and Wendy Smith, all of San Antonio, Christina Collins of Duson, and Michael Collins, Tyniki Collins, James Collins of Crowley.
Waver is, also, survived by her uncles, Columbus “Nookie” Matthews and Robert Francis of Crowley; a host of great-grandchildren, and family and friends that will remember the love and light that she brought into their lives. 
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 7, from 8 a.m. to 9:45a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church.

Margaret Arledge Borgelt

It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Margaret Arledge Borgelt announces her passing from this life on July 4, 2018, at the age of 93.
Margaret was born in Atlanta, Illinois, to Benjamin and Fern Heft on Dec. 17, 1924. Margaret was a homemaker, who dedicated her life to the care of her family.
She was an active member of the Methodist Church, a Girl Scout Troop Leader for five years, worked at the Council on Aging, and was a Sunday School Teacher for many years. Margaret also loved to cook and sew.
She was a kind and loving person and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Margaret is survived by her son, Benjamin Arledge of Crowley; her daughter, Col Elizabeth Arledge of Fairfax, Virginia; her four grandchildren, Allen, Kamie, Abigail and Ben; as well as four great-grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Fern Heft; her two husbands, Carroll Arledge and Wirth Borgelt; her daughter-in-law, Karen Arledge; and three sisters.
Funeral services for Margaret Arledge Borgelt, 93, of Crowley, will be held at Jennings United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews & Son Funeral Home in Jennings on Friday, July 6, from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Saturday, July 7, from 8 a.m. until the time of her service at 10 a.m.
Margaret will be laid to rest in Meadows Cemetery in Merryville, with a Graveside Service at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 7.

RAYNE - Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at a 2:30 p.m. at Gossen Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne, for Rita Ann Cormier, 72, who died Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at The Ellington in Rayne.

Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery #2 in Rayne.

Dolores Dale Yokum-Batiste

Dolores Dale Yokum-Batiste entered eternal rest on June 21, 2018, at her home in Los Angeles, CA following a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 4, 1940, to Joseph “Wash” Yokum and Virginia “Peggy” Young-Yokum in Branch, LA. IN 1971, she married her one true love, Walter Batiste Jr. To their union two children were born.
Mrs. Batiste was a 1958 high school graduate of Acadia Parish Training School, the later Armstrong High School and present-day Armstrong Middle School in Rayne. She furthered her education in business at a community college in Los Angeles.
She was employed at the University of Southern California for many years and retired from the U.S. Military Recruitment Office following many years of employment.
Dolores was raised into the Christian family of Maryland Chapel CME Church in Branch and was an active member. She was a member of he Catholic church and a choir member in Los Angeles.
In addition to her beloved husband of 47 years Walter Jr., she leaves the following to cherish her memory one son, Cazzi Andrea’ Batiste (Tameka); one daughter, Ciji A. Batiste of Los Angeles, CA; two granddaughters, T’Andrea’ and Lalonia Batiste of Los Angeles, CA; sisters, Geneva Yokum-Jenkins (James Jr.) and Ronnie Faye Yokum-Taylor, all of Lafayette; aunts, Mary Jane Fontenot and Irella Young of Beaumont, Texas; sister-in-law, Lillie Fontenot of Lake Charles; brothers-in-law, James Batiste Sr. (Corrine) and Paul Batiste of Los Angeles, CA; godsons, Randy Young of Branch and Terrance Johnson of Rayne; goddaughter, Randi R. Taylor of Lafayette; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and her graduating class of 1958.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Yokum; brother, Rodney Lee Yokum; in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Batiste Sr.; and a sister-in-law, Mildred St. Julien (Oscar Sr.).

Keith Joseph Alleman

Rayne - Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at a 2:30 p.m. at Gossen Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne, for Keith Joseph Alleman, 56, who died Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at The Ellington in Rayne.
Interment was in the St. Joseph Cemetery #2 in Rayne.

Survivors include his wife, Vanessa Myers Alleman; two daughters, Delani Alleman and Nicole Alleman; a son, Jeremy Alleman; a grandchild, Brooklyn Rae Alleman; his brother, Ricky Wayne Alleman and spouse Brenda P. Alleman, all of Rayne.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton Alleman; and mother, Margaret Foreman Alleman.

Marshall Brady Roberts

Indian Bayou - Marshall Brady Roberts went to his eternal home on July 4, 2018 at his home in Indian Bayou, LA at the age of 89. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 11:00 am at Indian Bayou Methodist Church in Indian Bayou, LA.

Marshall was born on June 11, 1929 to the late Morrison and Ruth Lyons Roberts in Vancleave, MS. He was a member of the first graduating class of Vancleave High School in 1948. He moved to Lafayette, LA in 1957 after serving in the Army.

Interment will be in the Indian Bayou Methodist Cemetery in Indian Bayou, LA.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years Peggy Morgan Roberts, three daughters Marsha Roberts Avara (Pete) of Pascagoula, MS, Holly Roberts Avara (Matthew) of Pascagoula, MS and Kelli Roberts of Branson, MS. Grandchildren are Madison Avara Brown (Clay), Morgan Avara Sanderson (Will), Travis Avara, Brady Avara and Matt Avara. Great grandchildren are Natalie Brown and Owen Brown. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Lyons Roberts and father Morrison Roberts, brother Walter “Pal” Roberts and sister-in-law Bettie Sue Breland Roberts.

Marshall was the owner and manager of Riverside Exxon Service Station in Lafayette, LA for 30 years. He was also owner and manager of an apartment complex in Lafayette for 15 years. He was appointed as a member of the Board of Commissioners Waterworks District No. 4 and also Board of Supervisors, Sewerage District No. 6 for Lafayette Parish and served on these committees for 20 years. Marshall was also an active member of Indian Bayou United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and man of strength and integrity who always put God and his family first.

A special thank you to Hospice of Acadiana, his best friend Brother Larry Maxwell, devoted family, neighbors and friends and niece Sheri Morgan Raggio for your constant love and support.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers contributions to Indian Bayou United Methodist Church or Hospice of Acadiana.

Visitation will be observed at Indian Bayou United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 9am-11am with the funeral at 11am.
